Swollen ankles and swollen feet are conditions characterized by abnormal distention of the ankles and feet.
• The bones of the ankle and foot form the distal region of the lower limb. These bones are responsible for balance, and support of the body’s weight through many activities, such as walking, running, standing, and jumping.
• Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not a cause for concern, particularly in cases of minor injury.
• However, ankles and feet that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could be signs of a serious underlying health problem that requires prompt medical attention.

CAUSES
Here are some of the reasons why a person’s ankle and feet may appear swollen:
• Trauma to the ankle or foot. The most common is a sprained ankle
• Pregnancy. This swelling is due to increased pressure on the veins and fluid retention
• Preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication in which high blood pressure and protein develop after the 20th week of pregnancy or immediately after birth.
• Edema
• Alcohol
• Venous insufficiency, a condition in which blood inadequately moves up from the legs and feet up to the heart.
• Infection. People with diabetic neuropathy and other nerve problem of the feet have an increased risk of infection affecting their feet
• Blood clots
• Lymphedema, a condition in which lymphatic fluid gathers in the tissues as a result of problems with the lymph vessels.
• Heart disease or heart failure
• Kidney disease
• Liver disease such as cirrhosis
• Lifestyle factors such as wearing ill-fitting shoes, having a sedentary life, walking or standing for long periods
• Obesity
• Certain medications including antidepressants, steroids, medications to help manage diabetes, birth control pills, calcium-channel blockers that help control blood pressure.
• Nutritional deficiencies
• Bone and tendon conditions
• Hormonal imbalance
Seek immediate medical attention if swollen ankle and feet is accompanied by chest pain, a pressure in the chest, shortness of breath, severe headache, upper abdominal pain, nausea or vomiting or fever

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms depend on the underlying causes and may range from:
• Painless increase in foot and ankles size
• Redness of skin around the swollen area
• Warm skin around the swollen area
• Ulceration with pus drainage
• Achy legs
It is of great importance not to ignore any type of swelling. The European Society of Cardiology in a 2015 report stated that one in five people will develop heart disease, but most don’t know that the first two symptoms of heart failure are swelling, starting at the feet and moving up through the ankles.

• Your feet can help you recognize hot and cold surfaces and act accordingly.
• Moreover, they help you recognize objects while walking, ensuring that you do not end up stumbling at any point.
• Because of this, numbness in the feet is a big problem. Not only do you lose sensation, but the numbness can also be a symptom of something far more serious.
• Although numbness in the feet is usually temporary, it can point towards a chronic condition behind the scenes, such as diabetes.
How Do You Spot Numbness in Your Foot?
• The most obvious symptom of numbness in the feet is losing sensation in them. They are highly sensitive, and they will become less so due to the problem.
• This, in turn, will affect your sense of balance and will begin to impede your daily life.
• Beyond that, you may also feel some other abnormal sensations in your feet, which include:
• Tingling in some parts of the feet without any contact.
• A prickling sensation.
• A feeling that your feet are being pushed at by a needle.
• Weakness in the feet.
• Pointing these additional symptoms out can help your doctor diagnose numbness in your feet.
What Causes the Numbness?
• The numbness is caused by abnormalities in the nervous system. The nerves may be damaged, blocked, or affected by an infection. They may also be compressed by your muscles.
• However, if the numbness is not temporary but chronic, it may be caused by an underlying medical condition, such as:
• A herniated disk.
• Chronic alcohol abuse.
• Diabetes.
• Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease.
• Frostbite.
• Lyme disease.
• Guillain-Barre syndrome.
• Multiple sclerosis.
• Morton’s neuroma.
• Sciatica.
• Peripheral vascular disease.
• Peripheral arterial disease.
• Injury to the spinal cord.
• Shingles.
• Inflammation of the blood vessels.

So, there are four basic foot reflexology techniques. I am going to add one. There is reflexologist named Dr. Manzanares from Spain and he does something called a press and slide which I think is really effective. The other four will be, thumb walking, finger walking, a hook and back up and rotation on a point. So, let's start with thumb walking.

With thumb walking you're basically going to be using the little part of, just this joint. Right, so you'll just be doing that. A lot of times people will say to kind of come up and back down. I want to really stress that if you can come down and maintain pressure and just come up a little bit and then back down again. So, you are moving infinitesimal, you're barely moving. You can practice on your forearm here. You're going to be doing that. So you're just inching ahead and again you're not going to pop up. A lot of people when they are teaching that, they pop up, so just be sure not to do that.

You're going to with a foot, you're going to press down just a little and come up and press down and come up, press down and come up. Now sometimes just wave the foot a little bit towards me and that will allow you to go a little deeper. As similarly, you could do finger walking. With finger walking I generally use it on the top of the foot. We could also use it on the sides of the foot. But generally not on the bottom plantar aspect. So, with that, you're just going to be doing the same kind of thing where you come down and come back up and back down again.

And you'll see, I am supporting the foot with my thumb on the other side. So, my thumb is moving to, you could actually move down between all of the metatarsal's here. Hook and back up, you're going to be using our thumb and you'll go into a point and then you press down and then you're going to have pull out just a little bit. It can be very deep. So, just be mindful and check in with your person, make sure you're not hurting them.

So again, you're going to press down and lean in a little bit and then back up. Generally points that are really good to use that on are the spleen reflex and the gall bladder reflex which are on either side of the feet. So, with this side you'll go hook and back up.

Rotation on a point. You're going to also use that thumb walking and you're just going to rotate the foot. So, it's right under the metatarsal heads, you come down and you just rotate over. I am actually going to walk the, what is called the diaphragm line. So, you go in and you're just going to rotate there. You can go over the entire diaphragm line.

Again, if somebody is you know, really anxious or feeling stressed out, that diaphragm line, the solar plexus point, which is right here, and the adrenal gland reflex are really powerful. And the last point is the press and slide with Dr. Manzanares. This is if you really want to get deep and you don't want to miss any points within there. So you're going to actually press down, you lean in, and you just slide a little bit and check in with your person, make sure you're not hurting them. You know, you want to kind of kick into it a place of parasympathetic, you know, relaxation. If you go beyond that, it's not serve going to them. So, again you press in and then you go up. Press in and slide and there will be continual pressure.

Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes the condition known as foot.drop , which occurs due to Peroneal nerve injury . Causes and treatment of Peroneal nerve injury is outlined .
What is foot drop?
The inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot.
A common symptom of foot drop is high steppage gait often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking.
When the person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.
Foot drop usually results from injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course.
The peroneal nerve begins from the L4,L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve.
The sciatic nerve starts n the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.
In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerve, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg.
The common peroneal nerve then ravels anterior, around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves.
The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle.
Conditions causing foot drop:
1-L4-L5 disc herniation
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop.
2-Lumbosacral plexus injury due to pelvic fracture
3-Sciatic nerve injury: hip dislocation
The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip.
4-Injury to the knee: kee dislocation
In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury.
5-Established compartment syndrome
•Foot drop is a late finding
•Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occur in patients if fasciotomy is not performed.
•Fasciotomy should be done early.
•4 hours of ischemia may be tolerated, but by 8 hours, the damage is often irreversible.
Treatment of peroneal nerve injury/foot drop:
•If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed.
•Obtain EMG and nerve studies of the patient.
•Recovery may take 1 year to 18 months.
•The big toe is the last to recover.
•If no recovery is achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.

ATHLETE'S FOOT SYMPTOMS:
• Itchy and burning toes and feet
• Scaly, very dry, cracked or peeling skin
• Fissures/splits and softening and whitening of the skin between the toes
• Cracking skin on the sole or heels
• Blisters
• Smelly feet

ATHLETE'S FOOT TREATMENT:
Athlete's foot can be treated locally with antifungal creams, sprays, liquids and powders that are available from your pharmacist without a prescription.

Topical antifungals include Terbinafine, Miconazole and Clotrimazole. Treatment should be used as directed by your pharmacist and should be continued for two weeks after the symptoms have disappeared to ensure the infection has been treated effectively.

WHEN TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR WITH ATHLETE'S FOOT:
• Treatments from a pharmacy don't work
• You're in a lot of discomfort
• Your foot is red, hot and painful – this could be a more serious infection
• You have diabetes – foot problems can be more serious if you have diabetes
• You have a weakened immune system – for example, you have had an organ transplant or are having chemotherapy
• If you are pregnant antifungal medication may not be suitable for you and you should make an appointment with your doctor to find out the best way to treat your athlete’s foot.

PREVENT GETTING & SPREADING ATHLETE'S FOOT:
There are really easy ways to avoid athlete's foot keeping your feet clean and dry is one of the most important prevention tips because fungi love warm and moist places.

• There’s no point treating your feet from athlete's foot if you constantly re-infect them by putting them into damp, fungal infected footwear. So change them on a regular basis and don’t wear the same footwear every day have a few pairs of work shoes and gym trainers so you can rotate.

• I have 3 pairs of work shoes that I rotate through during the weeks this is super important as it takes 24-48 hours for shoes to dry out properly so alternate and it will help.

• If you really have to wear the same footwear day after day, let’s say you're on holiday. Then dry them out using a hair dryer on a cold setting, taking the insoles out can also help them dry quicker.

• Another tip is to make sure your footwear isn’t too tight, if its too tight your toes are going to be squeezed together which encourages heat, sweating and fungus.

• Flip flops wear them in the bathroom and in public showers, pools, hot tubs, changing rooms basically wherever you may walk barefoot. It’s going to ensure you don't shed skin around for others to pick up but also stop you picking up other species of fungus. Also never wear anyone else's footwear.

Ball of the foot pain can include Morton's neuroma, capsulitis, plantar plate tears, stress fractures of the metatarsals, and ankle joint tightness. This is most common with running and walking. It can even happen in the morning after sleeping at night.

These problems tend to happen in the forefoot region; they can really cause toe pain and sore feet. So don't just blow this off on arthritis; there is a cure to your ball of the foot and front of the foot pain!

Ball of the foot pain can include Morton's neuroma, capsulitis, plantar plate tears, stress fractures of the metatarsals, and ankle joint tightness. This is most common with running and walking. It can even happen in the morning after sleeping at night.

These problems tend to happen in the forefoot region; they can really cause toe pain and sore feet. So don't just blow this off on arthritis; there is a cure to your ball of the foot and front of the foot pain!

Dr. Rowe shows how to relieve your foot, heel, and plantar fasciitis pain AT HOME, and it's shown in a easy to follow step-by-step guide.

First, an effective foot pain relief muscle, ligament, and tendon (aka soft tissue) massage technique is shown that may help release tightness, quickly helping to give foot and heel pain relief in as little as 30 SECONDS!

Second, foot pain relief mobility exercises are demonstrated to help increase range of motion and mobility in the feet, especially with locked up metatarsals. This is particularly good for dull, ACHY pains on the bottom of the foot (plantar fasciitis and a dropped foot arch), heel, and the top of the foot.

Third, strengthening exercises are shown to build up the area in and around the feet, helping to future-proof it and possibly lessen instances of pain. Also, this exercise may help restore normal pronation and supination of the foot.

Do you hate working on feet? Well, you may be putting too much work into it! Instead of sitting down and using your thumbs, use 8 fingers in tandem to strip up between the metatarsals. Mobilize the many bones by firmly grabbing the calcaneus with one hand and the metatarsals with the other, twisting in opposite directions.

Don't neglect the amazing array of anatomical structures! Your clients will be glad to have someone who finally works on their arches, puts pressure between the bones, and doesn't forget the ankle or toes. There's a lot to work with here!

Qui a inventé le foot ? - 1 jour, 1 question

Le mot football est la contraction de deux mots anglais : foot (le pied) et ball (le ballon). Alors, ce sont les Anglais qui ont inventé ce jeu ? Oui et non. Dans l’Antiquité, déjà, les Grecs, les Romains, et avant eux les Chinois jouaient au ballon. L’ancêtre du foot pourrait être « la soule » : un jeu de ballon qui se jouait des deux côtés de La Manche au Moyen Age. Mais le nombre de joueurs variaient d’un village à l’autre, le jeu était violent, et tous les coups étaient permis, y compris dans les tibias !
